During my studies at Cornish under Jim Knapp, he assigned a project where each student applied the compositional tools they’d been learning. The result of that assignment was this overlay song to Thelonious Monk’s tune Evidence. I’ve always enjoyed playing Evidence, and I came up with the quirky idea of writing a Monk-like melody in the spaces he provides. If you set one tune on top of the other you’d get a constant stream of notes. After hearing it for the first time, Jim Knapp turned to me and said, “You should name it ‘Acquittal’”, and the clever title stuck.
